Hi
Since the specific paint for the inside of the microwave is quite expensive, I was wondering if there are any alternative paints that I could use, like automotive paint?
It seems a shame to spend so much on paint that I will only use a tiny bit of.
thanks.

He is what I did to my old microwave. The bottom, inside metal part under the rotor glass table started to rust and peel. I sanded it lightly and simply painted it with a good appliance spray rust inhibitor type pain, white. I let it dry for a couple days with door open.. Then I heated couple cups or bowls of water to help cure the paint.
These cures only last for couple years so you will eventually have to buy another one but special paints are not needed. I would make sure not to use any paints that have leads, zinc based primers mixed into the paints.

Since you are going to eating food cooked in that microwave, I've got to admit, I'd be careful about what I spray the inside with. I'm sure it'd be fine as described, but you never know what's going to leach out during an active cooking cycle where the microwave radiation is bombarding and spot heating.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but saving a $ or $$ won't be worth it if something happens...

The other thing is that since different polymers, and synthetics react differently to both uneven heating, and acids/bases + heating (afterall that's how we discovered that BHP leaches out of #1 PTFE plastic bottles... acidic solution (apple juice) + heat...)...

I'd just make sure you are considering all the potential risks... then go for it!
