I bought a fixer 3 years ago and now the 30" whole house fan seems to be running slower than it used to. Does the motor need to be replaced or can it be serviced in some way?

Welcome to the forum Shuckie, I'm happy you joined

This might sound terribly dumb, but.... what's a fixer?

A fixer is a 30 year old house that had no updating/ remodeling done on it since it was built. It had gold wallpaper, almost black popcorn ceilings, green shag carpets, etc. It was a very common term in California during the real estate boom when you could buy a home for $200k and sell it for $500k, 6 months later.

Thank you very much for explaining, Shuckie - I'm a non-American so had no idea. Good to know

(btw: that interior just sounds: )

Is it a belt-drive fan or a direct-drive fan you're having? How old is it? As old as the house? (which is?)

Frankly I think it can only be decided by looking at the motor if the slowing down can be solved by servicing or need replacement, but with a belt-drive fan the pulleys could also need to be checked if causing a problem.

Some fans have two-speed motors, controlled by a thermostat switch. Before you start pulling things out and replacing them, you might check to see if that is the case.
