why do mobile phones have 3 terminals

first i smashed the phone.two leads hit ground after a couple fuses and doohickies. wow that wasnt that fun so i smashed,ok cracked, the battery appart and two are tied together. so my assumption is the third lead on the battery terminal is to stop me from trying to jam a duracell in there. a 9volt turned it on for about five mins and then it went gray. could someone with a more formal knowledge in electronics correct me?
